Al's Woodcraft's in-house
professional finishing
& refinishing shop

We've been finishing unfinished furniture since 1978 when we opened our own finishing shop and offered only 3 finishes. You can see in our finishing display that we've greatly expanded the finish choices since then! We offer stain finishes, paint finishes, 3 types of distressing, rubbed back edges for a worn look, glazed finishes, and combinations of these finishes. Our finishing display shows how these finishes look on the various wood types we sell - finishes vary a lot depending on the wood type.

We offer refinishing services in our shop as well and can usually refinish your finished furniture whether you bought it from us or not as long as it's made of solid wood.

Our shop must abide by the rules of the South Coast Air Quality Management Board and is inspected to be sure we are doing so. Our permit requires us to use low VOC products, no oil based products, thinners, or strippers. This usually means sanding the finish off of your piece (can't do carvings or veneers) and refinishing it with modern water based products. We cannot use your products, but we can usually match the finish of your existing furniture closely (example: refinish a buffet to match your dining table and chairs). Many customers will choose a finish from our finishing display rather than having an existing item at home matched. As long as the old finish is lighter than the new finish we can usually do the job!

These are jobs we do frequently:
1. reglue & clamp a split chair seat or a loose chair (cannot have broken or splintered or missing pieces, may also need refinishing)
2. reglue & clamp a door or drawer (cannot have broken or splintered or missing pieces, may also need refinishing)
3. refinish a table because the top is scratched/nail polish remover spilled on it (we need another item brought in to match - end table, dining chair, night stand, etc)
4. refinish a dining table or buffet to match new (darker) chairs
5. paint and rub back edges on a piece of furniture that started out stained, to give it a new look

Jobs we cannot do:
1. make missing parts or grow new wood where it's missing (dog chewed it, deep gouges, missing or broken legs, etc)
2. refinish items with finishes like Resistovar, wax, oil, or epoxy (we just can't get them off of the wood so it will accept our products)
3. refurbish valuable antiques or veneers - take these items to antiques specialists
4. outdoor furniture, upholstered furniture, baby furniture, or items that will be used in damp conditions like a bathroom or bedroom (the SCAQMD won't permit us to use the products required to finish these items properly like we used to be able to do)
GOOD WORK TAKES TIME - so be sure to allow enough, especially around holidays. Call the Tustin store for an approximate price quote and current wait time.
Our prices are based on size and complexity, and are almost always cheaper than other real finishing shops with permits - and our quality has been great since 1978!
